Topographical Surveys

Since 1990 we have experienced major changes in technology associated with the principles of topographical land surveying. The more senior members of staff at S.J.Prouse Design can remember the days of ranging rods, linen tapes and a site level! Traditional surveying techniques have set a good 'benchmark' to progress to one of the worlds most advanced surveying tools.

S.J.Prouse Design is now fully equipped to undertake full land and building surveys with the latest Leica TPS1200+ total station.

The level of detail surveyed varies depending on the client's specification. This can range from a basic boundary & level survey (to give the basic "lie-of-the land" and very often used for initial feasibility studies), to fully detailed topographical surveys that includes all significant visible above ground features.

Each feature surveyed is assigned a unique feature code, which enables the software to distinguish and differentiate between the data surveyed. This feature provides flexibility within the survey software and enables us to edit the visual impact of a layout.

Currently we are using LSS as topographical survey processing software. Our surveyors have experience of using this and have finely tuned its use to achieve maximum productivity on site.

Our topographical surveys are surveyed in 3D. Therefore in addition to providing contoured plans, we are able to provide 3D digital terrain models (DTMs) on CD or email. This is a computer generated "wire-frame" model of the topography of the site and can be rendered if required.

We understand the importance of a comprehensive survey drawing, and if required can include significant features adjacent to the site being surveyed; e.g. overlooking window positions, ridge & eaves heights etc. This additional information can be included on the plan drawings. With the "non-contact" Direct Reflex "DR" survey equipment that we use, we are able to survey these features remotely, without gaining direct access to neighbouring properties.

When a site layout design has been established, we appreciate how critical it can be that this information is accurately transferred onto site. Using the Leica TPS1200+ total station our surveyors can set-out points on site as instructed, using the engineers' design drawings and design co-ordinates.

We can provide the survey data as 2D contoured plans, and also as 3D computer 'digital terrain models' (DTMs). With the inclusion of proposed design information from the client, volumes of site material can be calculated.

Survey drawings can be provided as traditional plans plotted on paper or film, email or CD in a variety of software formats.

All survey equipment is regularly calibrated and tested in accordance with the manufacturer's warranties.

Recent surveys undertaken have included a 25,000 sq.ft industrial development and a residential development for 10 houses and simple domestic site layouts. No matter what the size of the project S.J.Prouse Design will ensure it is given the same level of professional care and attention.
